Don't worry...I've given it more than enough thought for the both of us........Wood, mahogany in particular is gone up so much...the first cut on any board is always worrisome.........I think there night be an actual psych description: FCS......"First Cut Syndrome":)
In making a block front chest, with shells...what would you used for a secondary wood? Pine, Poplar, Oak? I thought I read somewhere that Chestnut was used for the drawer sides and back...would it also have been used for the drawer bottoms?
In my limited experience....When finding boards this wide at 4/4...by the time it is flattened, straightened and trued, because of bowing and cupping or twist...they get close to 3/4 or sometimes less!...so getting 4/4 boards are sometimes just as much as a waste as 5/4 ..after all "processing"...
I'm contemplating building a block front chest. I'm having "first cut syndrome"...... I have a wide piece of 5/4 Genuine Mahogany 21+ inches wide 14ft long. I was wondering, how to best utilize the wide board. I will be using part of it for the top of the chest. (I have another Mahogany board...
First of all you will need to post photos of this build....very interesting to use walnut. I think if the drawer fronts are to be veneered then yes on the cross banding If solid then no...Just my two cents, which even with inflation is only worth one cent!
I see that it might not be a Harold Ionson piece...there are doors on the left and right ....I think he made them with 4 swinging drawers on each side, like the Seymour original....
Soooo... are the spice box plans on the SAPFM website the same as what was offered for sale at FWW? and different then the ones that were printed in the FWW magazine? three different plans?
I was looking for plans, photos or information about clothes racks for drying clothes in the 18th century. An Historic house wants to build/add one to their kitchen/laundry and is looking for examples. Thanks in advance for any help or information.
