This will be an event in which we will celebrate period Southern furniture from Georgia and South Carolina!  In the Colonial and early Federal Periods you could not be deeper in the South!

SAPFM Peach State 2nd Meeting Notice
A Celebration of Furniture in the Deep South
Friday & Saturday October 18th -19th, 2024
9am-5pm each day
Woodcraft Store, 8560 Holcomb Bridge Road, Alpharetta Georgia 30022

As many of you know, Bill Markert has researched early Georgia furniture extensively in recent years and has built several pieces.  He will lead each morning of this meeting and he will cover the construction of an early Georgia worktable which was used in the Athens area, circa 1800.  The specific replica Bill has built is based on an original table currently in the collection at the Old Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville, Georgia.  This two drawer table was exhibited at the High Museum of Art in 1972.  Bill will discuss methods used by the original builders of these worktables and demonstrate his hybrid machine and hand tool method of working to fabricate a similar piece. His presentation will include the history of early Georgia work tables.

On August 10 of this year Bill conducted a workshop in which several of our chapter members received instruction and built a drawer front from this worktable which features line work with a jonquil inlay. Charlie, Stephen and Howard please bring your work to display at this meeting!

During the afternoons of October 18 and 19 John Ogilvie will be demonstrating the construction of serpentine drawers and cabinet doors on the Holmes Edwards library bookcase, circa 1750, which is currently displayed in the Heyward Washington House of the Charleston, South Carolina Museum.  John was given access to photograph and measure this historic piece.  John’s presentation will include seven short slide shows.  He will demonstrate flattening curled crotch veneer and constructing a serpentine door using a veneer press, cauls and wooden forms.  John will show how to construct a cyma curve, crotch mahogany-ribbon stripe veneer door facing.  This will include routing the curved stringing.  He will discuss construction of the serpentine drawers including the curved cock beading and serpentine slide out panels at the cabinet top.

During this meeting Ron Young has graciously agreed to demonstrate his vacuum table-saw fence for cutting fine veneers and bandings and will also bring a couple of jigs and small tools he finds useful in his shop.

Bob Baker will present photos of his shop illustrating how to improve workshop organization.  Ron is impressed with Bob’s organization so we know it must be something to behold!

Many thanks to our chapter Patriarch Ken Johnson for organizing this event!

We will have “show and tell” each day during lunch - bring your projects or thumb-drives!

Meeting is FREE but there will be a charge for your lunch. Bring some cash! Tens & Ones work.
